Shiatsu is based on the concept that energy (known as "ki") flows through channels throughout the body.  These channels are known as the meridian system.  When energy is balanced and flows freely through the meridians, the body's self-healing force functions optimally.  Disturbances in the energy flow can disrupt mental, emotional and/or physical well-being.

The 12 primary meridians form a complex system of links between the body's organs.  Each meridian is associated with a specific organ and also with particular physical, mental and emotional qualities. Applying pressure to points along a meridian influences the functioning of that organ and all that's associated with it.

Shiatsu techniques
Various techniques are used to balance the energy flow:
  • Stretching
  • Joint rotation
  • Pressure applied to the meridians with the thumbs, fingers, hand palms, elbows or feet
  • "Unwinding" (extremely light pressure applied to release tension or holding patterns)
  • Moxibustion (the application of heat on meridian points using a special burning cigar made of the herb mugwort)
I use Shiatsu in my personal sessions.

Effects of Shiatsu
Shiatsu gives a deep feeling of relaxation, relieves stress and promotes your well-being.  It improves your blood and energy circulation as well as improving the lymph drainage system.  It reduces muscle pain and stiffness and can lower blood pressure. It creates more vitality, resistance and energy.

While Shiatsu works as preventive medicine to support your wellness, it can also help to relieve specific problems such as:
  • stress, tension, exhaustion
  • back pain, stiff neck or shoulders
  • muscular tension
  • insomnia or other sleep problems
  • headache or migraine
  • menstrual dysfunction
  • digestive problems

Contraindications
If your answer is "yes" to one of the following questions, read more here to determine whether or not Shiatsu is right for you at this time.

1. Do you have (or are currently undergoing treatment as a result of) cancer?

2. Are you in your first trimester of pregnancy?

3. Do you have a fever?

4. Do you have any localized infections or wounds?
